my reinterpretation of hypnagogic's essay:
for mobius, the concept had slowly developed with time: life as art, art as life. for the syndicate, however, it had been thrust abruptly into their short sighted field of regard.
the feasts had begun with the loftiest of inspirations, and yet the most pragmatic of implementations: a few friends, a few drinks, and a facile presentation of provision. with time, it grew; and for mobius, his epithet whispered divine provocation. the infinite intertwining of reception and expression sprung from him naturally, but soon he found that he could no longer afford his art, his life.
with little notice, the syndicate convened to decide upon integrating their financial and business acumen with mobius’ vision. they discussed traditional concepts and risk-to-returns, but in the end were seduced by the forte of their host, just as they knew others would be. and thus, it was decided that they would host the banquet. the gourmand would pay to dine, and pay again if they returned, with all financial burdens borne by the investors.
the syndicate telephoned, scheduled, funded, and wheedled to get the project launched. with mobius’ input they planned the menu and purchased the ingredients, from abalone to candied yams. accoutrements were selected and counters provided. long tables with comfortable chairs were arranged in a room secured and decorated for the event.
people were contacted. the feast required cooks and chefs, servers, dishwashers, uniform services, logo and menu designers. decorators, lighting and sound specialists, financial professionals and auditors were needed, together with media contacts, wine stewards, musicians, and a host of others, each one adroit in their expertise. the syndicate invested in television, radio, and trade magazines. tables were carefully prepared, ovens heated, and refrigerators chilled. the kitchen staff carefully washed and peeled, trimmed and seasoned the variety of foodstuffs. the sound crew adjusted volumes, the musicians tuned, and the lighting crew infused the room with ambiance. with a nod all-around, the feast was ready.
as the doors opened, patrons poured into the hall. the preparations and planning provided a vehicle for some modicum of success, and the syndicate found itself with a reasonable gain versus expenditure. the servers found themselves pressed with tips, and the designers foresaw the tangible returns from the portfolio addition. it was upon mobius, however, that the most adulation fell, both verbally and financially.
and so, the syndicate reconvened to consider reprisals and repetitions, cost-benefits and ratios...
